In its 41st year now the 606 nautical mile Rolex Middle Sea Race will begin on the 17th of October this year while the prize winners ceremony that honours the accomplished sailors is to be held on the 24th of October this year. Entries for participating in the Rolex Middle Sea Race are open till the 10th of October. The response to this year’s competitive event has been tremendous and the organizers are putting in every ounce of added effort to ensure that the Rolex Middle Sea Race for 2009 turns out to be a huge success.

The Royal Malta Yacht Club that collaborates with Rolex to bring forward the Rolex Middle Sea Race shut the 18th Century Fort Manoel its former club house and shifted base a half mile away to Marsamxetto to the new club house in Ta’Xbiex. The organizers are busy upgrading this former government building into a world class sailing club for the 2009 event. A total of 77 boats crossed the starting line this year at the Rolex Middle Sea Race but with the growing awareness and the increased levels of participation, the committee is sure that the total number of boats that will enter this competition this year will cross the 80 mark. All the sailors that are participating in the regatta this year are all set to break the current record of 47 hours 55 minutes and 3 seconds in 2007 that was set by George David onboard his Rambler in 2007.

About two months away now the Rolex Middle Sea Race sponsored by Rolex is bound to draw a large number of former participants in the role of either a competitor or a spectator. An array of onshore activities draws a large number of people that come to celebrate life and the ingenuity of humanity.
